Insurance policies are written in technical language that can be difficult to navigate without specialist knowledge. Understanding key insurance terms is the foundation for being a better-informed buyer and a more effective claimant. This glossary covers the most important terms you will encounter across UAE insurance products — from motor and health to commercial and life insurance.

Core Policy Terms

Premium: The amount you pay for your insurance policy, typically quoted annually or monthly. Premium is the price of the risk transfer from you to the insurer. Excess / Deductible: The amount you contribute to each claim before the insurer pays. A higher excess reduces your premium. Policy Period: The duration of coverage — usually 12 months, commencing on the inception date. Sum Insured: The maximum amount the insurer will pay under the policy. For property insurance, this should equal the replacement/reinstatement value. Limit of Indemnity: In liability policies, the maximum the insurer will pay per claim and/or in aggregate for the policy year.

Endorsement: A modification to the standard policy terms — adding, removing, or clarifying coverage. Endorsements become part of the policy and override conflicting standard terms. Schedule: The document that personalises the policy to your specific risk — names, dates, values, and any special conditions. Inception Date: The date from which coverage begins.

Claims-Related Terms

Indemnity: The core insurance principle that you should be returned to the same financial position as before the loss — no better, no worse. Subrogation: The insurer's right, after paying your claim, to pursue recovery from the third party responsible for your loss in your name. Third parties cannot escape liability simply because you had insurance. Adjuster / Loss Adjuster: An independent professional appointed by the insurer to investigate, assess, and value your claim. Policyholder should cooperate but has the right to challenge the adjuster's findings.

No Claims Discount (NCD): A premium reduction awarded for claim-free years — typically applied in motor and health insurance. Protected NCD: An endorsement that preserves your NCD after one claim. Average: A penalty applied when the sum insured is less than the actual value at risk — partial claims are paid proportionately, not in full.

Health Insurance Terms

TPA (Third Party Administrator): A company appointed by the insurer to manage health insurance claims on their behalf — issuing insurance cards, authorising treatment, and processing bills. Co-payment: The percentage of each medical claim you pay yourself — for example, a 20% co-payment means you pay 20% of each bill and the insurer pays 80%. Pre-existing Condition: A medical condition you had before the policy started — often excluded or subject to a waiting period.

Essential Benefits Plan (EBP): The minimum mandatory health insurance standard in Dubai. DHA: Dubai Health Authority — the regulatory body overseeing health insurance in Dubai. DoH: Department of Health Abu Dhabi — the regulatory body overseeing health insurance in Abu Dhabi. Network: The hospitals and clinics your insurer has agreed fee structures with — using in-network providers is essential for full coverage.

Motor and Other Key Terms

Comprehensive Cover: Motor insurance covering both third-party liability and damage to your own vehicle. Third-Party Liability (TPL): The minimum mandatory motor cover — protecting others from your negligence, not your own vehicle. Agency Repair: Repairs carried out at an authorised dealership using genuine manufacturer parts. Non-Agency Repair: Repairs at an independent garage — adequate for older vehicles, but may affect manufacturer's warranty.

Open Cover: A rolling marine insurance policy that automatically covers all shipments declared under agreed terms — avoiding the risk of uninsured cargo. Claims-Made Policy: Coverage triggered when the claim is made during the policy period — as opposed to occurrence policies, which respond to events during the policy period regardless of when claimed.
